Rev. Yi Wang

My name is Yi Wang. I am a church planter of a Chinese congregation in southern California. I grew up in China and became a Christian in Italy when I studied Architecture there. In 2015, I came to the U.S. to study at Westminster Seminary California and graduated in 2018. In 2019, I

passed the candidacy exam and was later ordained as a church-planting minister to start a Chinese congregation, Covenant Chinese Reformed Church, under the oversight of Christ Reformed Church in Anaheim, CA. Currently, there are currently 44 members on our roll, with attendance around 50 in good days.

Here is a brief history and outlook of our service and activities. After a year (June 2018-July 2019) of in-home Bible study, we launched our worship service from August 2019. We worship our Triune God by singing psalms and hymns, confessing our sins and receiving his gracious absolution, hearing his Word preached and eating and drinking at his table. All is done in Chinese language. After the morning service, in the afternoon hour, we focus on our doctrinal

standard, the Three Forms of Unity. For many, this is their first time reading these historic Reformed confessional documents.

During the week, we also provide study groups to enrich people’s spiritual life. We have read Carl Trueman’s book Martin Luther on Christian Life, which I translated into Chinese and was

published in China. We are currently reading through the third volume of Calvin’s Institutes. We also organize on Saturday morning a reading club for brothers. Since we have many young families, once two week on Friday night, we have a parenting fellowship, sharing experience and

lessons on parenting.

Speaking of children, since the establishment of this church plant, there were 12 covenant children baptized into Christ’s church. It was a great blessing to administer the sign and seal of God’s faithful promise on these little ones. Last month, we also had the privilege to baptize a

new convert. Moreover, the Lord has blessed us financially. In the past year 2020, we have exceeded our budget with the aid of our overseeing church. We pray and plan to reach financial maturity in the

next year or two. While planting this local Reformed congregation, we also endeavor to raise awareness of the Reformed tradition among the Chinese community locally and globally. We organize two majoractivities to this regard: Reformation Conference in the fall to promote the history and tradition of the Protestant Reformation, and Summer Seminar where we offer some more in-depth discussions on theology and Christian life. Through our website, social media, and other online platforms, we are able to reach out to all Mandarin-speakers worldwide. Our WeChat public platform has just reached 12,000 subscribers last month, unfortunately was shut down by the

government. Every month I receive letters and notes from people in China appreciating our out-reach effort.
